15 years ago a ridiculously bright journalist - whom I had never met - told me: “ I saw your face in an article and I knew that one day I would become your client.”
I registered it but I didn’t feel it.
Do you want me to be completely truthful?
I thought: “You’re just making this up.”
But that person became a client. And I kept hearing it: "I saw you and knew I wanted to work with you. I was waiting for the right offer."
And people kept signing up.
And I continued to ignore it for a very long time.
It pains me to say why I kept ignoring.
Shame and Patriarchal Bullshit.
Reason 1. Shame and Fear Marketing
Because deep down I still thought: You should know who I really am. My brain works at full speed 24/7. It keeps generating ideas and 9 out of 10 times I immediately jump in and do it. But I never finish it.
I forget to do things. All The Time.
My brain is a huge ADHD / autistic mindmap. Do you know those huge maps with circles and lines and tiny letters and arrows you see on your desktop?
That’s what the inside of my brain looks like.
I’m a mess.
Reason 2. Patriarchal Bullshit Marketing
Deep down I was still convinced that: I’m not a proper marketing /branding person. I have way too much fun doing things the non-proper intuitive way. But - when I still worked for 'Proper Marketing Companies' I got completely bored in large board rooms with important people doing important things. Bored by the board.
Sure, I have all those years of experience, the Fortune 500 companies. The 6 figures business. It's all true. Ultimately it's also a whole bunch of:
blah blah blah blah. . .
Many women have been raised with the idea that - in order to play in the grown-up (read: world of -white - male CEO's - you need to:
- Properly and consistently explain your program.
- To impress people with your LinkedIn list of Epic Achievements.
- To withdraw behind a facade of perfectness.
- We all grew up in the patriarchal way of properly and clearly ‘explaining what we do’.
- We start at A. Finish at Z. And that’s it.
In my mind relying on: ‘I saw you and wanted to work with you’ was simply Not Proper Marketing.

But over the last few years, I have learned that the old patriarchal ways of marketing don’t work anymore when they infuse shame instead of joy.

We have fallen for the completely wrong belief that Creating Something and Marketing Something are two different things.
It’s not.
Both actions stem from the same place.
- Free-flowing creating, studying, researching, thinking, feeling, and
- Your marketing and selling actions are both LOVE.
Yes. Plain and Simple. Love.
But shame, the fear of making mistakes, the painful way of force ourselves to do it correctly, and the deep and stinking overwhelm keep many of us from getting clients.
